This individual mini pond is created from an original 225 litre wine barrel in our barrel forge. In the garden or on the balcony and terrace, it is an eye-catcher. Aquatic plants, fountains and other beautiful things can be used in it and bring a little pond flair home. The wooden barrel is sanded from the outside and the rings are screwed to the barrel.
The oak barrel was previously used for many years for red wine storage, which is why the wood inside is intensively discoloured red. Before using it as a mini pond, the wine barrel should be "rinsed" so that the wine residues come out of the barrel. Simply fill in water, leave for one to several days and then replace. This washing process can take several days, depending on how much red wine has been absorbed by the wood.
Oiling the surface helps to prevent the natural greying of the oak wood, which should be refreshed once or twice a year. The 1/4 pond is approx. 23 cm high, the 1/2 approx. 43 cm and the 3/4 approx. 70 cm. The diameter at the bottom is approx. 56 cm and runs upwards to a diameter of approx. 65-70 cm. Depending on the barrel, the wall thickness is approx. 2-3 cm.
If the wooden barrel has stood dry for a long time, the wood contracts and small gaps are created between the individual barrel staves. So when refilled, a mini pond could lose some water. Then just have some patience and refill the wine barrel. Over the course of about one to two days, the wood expands again and seals the barrel in a completely natural way. Therefore, no pond liner or similar is required.
If the water is not replaced at the beginning and stands too long, it can "tilt". Therefore, rinse a few times with clean water until it no longer stains. The reddish water can be safely used for watering plants.
