THE STORY At sea, timekeeping was of vital importance. Even before the invention of a sea-worthy ship chronometer (over 250 years after the discovery of the "New World"), one helped with hourglasses, which ran very inaccurately and had to be turned over every half hour, but still helped, e.g. such as guard services, maintain a sense of time in days of fog and bad weather or simply to measure the speed of the ship.
